Homeowner checks that are worth doing
- Replace or inspect a dirty return-air filter
- Make sure supply and return vents are open and unobstructed
- Keep grass, debris and stored items away from the outdoor unit
- Check that the thermostat is powered and set correctly
- Look for unusual ice, water, buzzing or repeated breaker trips
When to stop troubleshooting
Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker or bypass electrical safety controls. Persistent electrical faults, compressor problems, refrigerant issues and frozen coils need proper diagnosis.
Useful information for the service call
Tell us the thermostat setting, indoor temperature, whether the indoor blower is running, whether the outdoor fan and compressor are running, and what changed before the problem started.
